Consecration Mass

At 11.30am on Saturday 12th July, Archbishop Peter Smith of Southwark presided at a service of consecration and dedication of St John's church and the pontifical mass that followed. It is 80 years since St John's was built but  the church had never been consecrated.  This was a splendid service and a fitting marking of that 80th anniversary.

Archbishop Peter anoints the consecration crosses around the church.

A lighted brazier was placed on the newly anointed altar, after the relics had been deposited and Archbishop Peter imposed incense which had been specially bought from the Holy Land for the occasion.

After the Mass, a sumptuous lunch prepared by members of the parish was served in the Hall, at the end of which Archbishop Peter cut the celebration cake as a volley of fireworks erupted outside.

Launch of Pipe Organ Project

Today at parish masses in both churches, Fr Christopher launched an exciting new project to enrich the musical life of our parish. The plan involves moving St John's pipe organ to St Andrew's( where there is currently no instrument) and restoring some 1840s Holdich pipework to make a new/old organ at St John's.

Fr Christopher hopes that the parish will be able to raise the £12.5k needed to do this, in addition to a private donation pledge of the same sum, an investment in the project by the organ builders, F H Browne, and some fundriaisng that is to be carried out by applying to grant making bodies.

Donations can be made directly to Fr christopher, or using the donations page on this website. Thank you.

More than 50 people attended all or part of the holy hour before the Blessed Sacrament at St John's, on Corpus Christi Sunday, taking part in the worldwide hour of prayer led by Pope Francis in Rome. The period of exposition concluded with choral Evening Prayer and Benediction, and followed a lovely parish mass in the morning at which four children made their First Holy Communion.

Maria Young was received into the full communion of the Catholic Church as a member of the Personal Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham on Tuesday in Holy Week. It was a lovely and moving service, at which some friends sang Byrd's Mass for four voices and pieces of Tallis and Durufle.

Maria is pictured (centre) with Deacon Jed Watkins (left) and Fr Christopher Lindlar, Parish Administrator, and is flanked by her sponsors, Ruth Cooke and Richard Pond after the service.
